Expert Practice Consulting
How can I help your organisation maximise the full potential of your expertise
Where is your expertise being trapped?
I work with leaders to examine the organisational conditions affecting expert contribution. This can include:
decision-making processes;
culture and informal organisational norms;
leadership behaviour;
expert roles and career pathways;
incentives, performance expectations and workload;
collaboration between technical and business functions;
knowledge transfer and succession risk;
workforce and capability strategy; and
the capability of the experts themselves.
The objective is not to produce another broad culture report. It is to identify the specific points at which valuable expertise is being delayed, diluted, trapped, or ignored.
Find the practical improvements
Once the problem is visible, I help leaders determine which changes are most likely to make a meaningful difference.
That might mean involving experts earlier in particular decisions. Redesigning critical roles. Changing how recommendations are presented and challenged. Creating a credible technical career pathway. Giving experts greater exposure to business and strategic forums. Adjusting a leadership process. Or developing the influence and enterprise capabilities of strategically important expert groups.
The right intervention depends on where the expertise is getting stuck.
Why work with me?
I have spent more than 25 years working inside and alongside large, expertise-dependent organisations across financial services, telecommunications, infrastructure and utilities.
My career has included senior responsibility for organisational development, people and culture, strategic workforce planning, leadership development, capability, talent, succession and enterprise change. I have advised executives and boards, led major workforce initiatives and helped organisations rethink how they build and use capability over the longer term.
I have also coached more than 550 technical experts and people leaders across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, India and the United States, achieving a personal Net Promoter Score of 76.
I understand the organisational systems surrounding expertise, but I also understand what those systems feel like to the experts working within them. I have seen how a seemingly sensible policy, structure or leadership expectation can unintentionally reinforce silos, reward firefighting or prevent good judgment from reaching the people making the decision.
My approach is practical, backed by 25 years of experience, research-informed, and grounded in how expertise works.
Where is expertise getting stuck in your organisation?
If your organisation depends on specialist knowledge but is not gaining its full value, I can help you understand why.
Together, we can identify the systems, behaviours and routines limiting expert contribution, and determine the practical changes most likely to improve decisions, capability and organisational outcomes.
